The Biden Administration brought into office with them a wave of pro-abortion policies that put many pro-life medical professionals in difficult situations and left a tangled mess for the Trump 47 Administration to unravel. One industry that received immense pressure in the wake of the Dobbs decision overturning Roe v. Wade was the nearly 60,000 retail pharmacies who were smacked with new guidance to stock and dispense mifepristone (MIF-eh-PRIS-tone) and misoprostol (MAI-so-PROS-tol) for patients with federally funded coverage like Medicare and Medicaid. These two infamous drugs form the deadly cocktail of medication-induced abortions.
Litigation was brought on behalf of some states and religious pharmacies, leading to revisions in the guidance, but much ambiguity remained. Abortion activists have focused public pressure and shame campaigns against pharmacies and even individual pharmacists who object to distributing these abortion pills.
Enter the Trump Administration 2.0 and the excellent new leadership of Health and Human Services. First, a January 2025 executive order reestablishing enforcement of the Hyde Amendment (banning taxpayer funded elective abortions). Then, a subsequent February 2025 order for the new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to eliminate burdensome or inappropriate federal regulations. Now, HHS has fully rescinded that 2023 guidance, bringing much needed relief to pro-life pharmacists nationwide. Finally, decisions about stocking and dispensing these abortion-inducing drugs are up to state laws and individual decisions according to the conscience of these professionals, a restoration of conscience rights protected by the Constitution that we should celebrate.
Chemical abortion now accounts for a majority of U.S. abortions, a shift driven by expanded telehealth services and regulatory changes. This shift has reduced medical oversight and increased risks for women, all while making it easier to bypass state abortion restrictions. President Trump has staked out many public pro-life policy positions, and we count on them to stick to their guns in the coming fights.
Conservatives must stand firm on the protection of innocent life! The Trump administration has come to the rescue of the religious liberty and conscience rights of pharmacists, but the fight against abortion services and medication is far from over. Even now, the FDA is unclear about the future of these dangerous drugs. There is much of work to be done! Find your place.
