Social science has long shown that involved fatherhood is essential for a child’s success. It is linked to better emotional development and a path out of poverty. But the benefits for the fathers themselves are often overlooked. Drawing on data and, frankly, my own personal experience, marriage and fatherhood is truly the most fulfilling path a man can take.
Data from 2022 General Social Survey reveals that men between the ages of 18 and 55 report their highest levels of happiness when they are married with children. Specifically, 35% of married dads describe themselves as “very happy,” and nearly 50% say they are “pretty happy.” This stands in stark contrast to single men or even married men without children, who report lower levels of life satisfaction.
Brad Wilcox, a sociology professor at the University of Virginia, explains that this isn’t just a cultural phenomenon but a biological one. Being physically present with children actually “domesticates” men by triggering hormonal changes, including a decrease in testosterone. While some might view a decline in testosterone as a negative, Wilcox notes that this shift reduces aggressiveness and helps men transition into a more stable, family-oriented life. Furthermore, despite the rising pay of women, married fathers continue to work harder and earn more than single men, driven by the purpose of providing for their families.
The “daily grind” of parenting—dealing with tantrums, school schedules, and messes—is precisely what brings meaning to life. The joys of a child’s giggle or watching your son or daughter learn to spell and read far outweighs the frustrations of a busy household.
Ultimately, marriage and fatherhood are not just personal choices but essential foundations for a flourishing society. Our mission should be clear: American policy and culture must return to prioritizing stable marriages and the raising of children. For men, the “transition into family” is the discovery of a richer, deeper happiness that can’t be found in a spreadsheet or a paycheck. I know this deeply from personal experience, as I’m sure you do, too. And the data backs it up! Men want just two things in life: to marry and to have children.
