The Trump Administration is moving swiftly to address fraud connected to government programs in Minnesota, particularly involving several individuals of Somali origin. In late November 2025, the acting U.S. Attorney for Minnesota, Joseph H. Thompson, announced indictments in a wire fraud case linked to a Medicaid-funded housing program. Six people from Somalia and two others have been charged in connection with this alleged scheme.
This development follows earlier cases connected to a nonprofit called Feeding Our Future, which received federal funds intended to support child nutrition and welfare programs. In that broader investigation, dozens of defendants — most of whom were identified as Somali — pled guilty to charges of fraud tied to the use of federal funds. Minnesota’s mishandling of this substantial loss of taxpayer dollars is drawing lots attention from both local and national media. Minnesota has one of the largest Somali communities in the United States, and many members have become U.S. citizens or long-term residents. The Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program, designed to offer humanitarian protection to individuals from countries affected by conflict or disaster, has long applied to Somalis who arrive in the United States. These programs are intended to be temporary — they should not endure unchanged for decades.
In many of these Minnesota cases, these improperly obtained funds were later transferred outside the United States. This money sent back to Somalia has been linked to all kinds of benefits by terrorist organizations operating there. Not only our international aid, but now domestic welfare programs are apparently up for grabs in financing extremist organizations across the globe.
Representatives from Minnesota — including a U.S. congressman — have demanded further investigation and argued that state leadership should address why and how such extensive improper activity may have occurred. The issue has become a huge point of contention in not only local Minnesota politics, but in discussions around the country about immigration status and taxpayer-funded welfare programs.
The Trump Administration must continue their hard-charging federal efforts to pursue cases of alleged fraud involving public funds and the various fallout that surrounds them. American communities, workers, and taxpayers are in desperate need of the integrity and oversight the Trump Administration is bringing.
