When New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani gave his inaugural address on January 1st, he said he wanted to replace “the frigidity of rugged individualism with the warmth of collectivism.” That phrase quickly sparked national debate. His supporters attempt to frame collectivism as fairness and shared responsibility, but history shows that Mamdani is preaching a dangerous lie. Collectivist systems always come with tyranny and economic failure. Around the world, socialist governments have consistently centralized power, trampled individual rights, and destroyed societies.
One reason these socialist ideas gain traction in America is because younger generations simply haven’t been taught the real history of socialist regimes. Many young people have been taught socialism is about sharing resources and fairness, but few if any are taught about the mass starvation, forced labor, and political repression that happens when governments take total control. When these socialist states fail, their proponents simply dismiss that failure as improper implementation, rather than it being flawed at the core.
Socialism depends on a specific view of human nature. In these “collectivist” systems, the individual is treated as secondary to the needs of the group or the state. This is fundamentally backward. In the American tradition and in the Christian worldview, human dignity begins with the individual, who is created with inherent value and responsibility. Strong societies are built only when individuals freely contribute — not when the state provides all its citizens’ needs.
History shows that when governments try to control every bit of society, from churches and families to social services and even voluntary organizations, all of these institutions lose independence and effectiveness. The shift to state power weakens the very social fabric that these collectivists claim to want to protect. Strong communities are built not on coercion, but on free people choosing to work hard and be generous.
Freedom and human flourishing depend on protecting the individual. Societies that prioritize individual dignity and personal responsibility consistently produce more innovation, prosperity, freedom, and stability than than any state-centralized control. The emotional promise of “warm collectivism” may sound compassionate, but history proves it will lead only to tyranny. Individual liberty is not selfishness – it is the foundation of a thriving civilization.
The false promises of collectivism are the opposite of the American dream. At PhyllisSchlafly.com, we stand against the rise of socialism. To join our fight, go to PhyllisSchlafly.com. Thanks for listening and join us next time for the Phyllis Schlafly Report.
