Republican redistricting plans are sweeping the nation. Districts are typically redrawn every ten years following the census, but they can also be revised by a state legislature at any time. The popularity of these moves has increased in the wake of serious problems with the Biden Administration’s 2020 census reapportionment models.
With control of the House hanging in the balance, redistricting has turned into a political firestorm. Whichever side controls the House gets to decide what is voted on, and if Democrats regain power, they will surely stonewall the America First agenda and likely try to impeach President Trump … yet again.
Redrawn maps in several states could allow Republicans to pick up as many as ten seats, bolstering their current slim margin of control. The Indiana and Ohio legislatures have debated plans that could yield a net gain of two GOP seats each. Missouri also redrew its congressional districts, but Democrats, however, are seeking to overturn the Missouri legislature through a vote on a statewide ballot. A similar redistricting in Florida could net three to five new GOP seats.
Most of the attention, however, landed on Texas, where Republicans passed a map to gain up to five more GOP seats. This kicked off a litany of lawsuits, resulting in lower court decisions blocking the effort, though eventually the Supreme Court gave it a green light late last year, staying the lower court decision. Texas holds a very early primary, which is less than two months away, so the Supreme Court had to act fast to allow the redrawn lines to take effect. While the High Court has not rendered a full ruling in the challenge to Texas, they are expected to use another case on appeal from Louisiana to weaken a badly interpreted provision of the Voting Rights Act that Democrats have used to thwart Republican redistricting for decades.
These redistricting efforts are not simply partisan gamesmanship. They are a real attempt to stop leftist shenanigans to lock up power in Congress, and allow real reforms to flow from our federal legislature.
