A recent article in our Education Reporter highlighted many concerning reactions to the election of Zohran Mamdani as mayor of New York City. His victory carries many broad political implications. Following the election, a widely viewed post on the social media platform X featured a speaker who claimed that demographic changes and strategic political organizing will eventually lead to significant shifts in American politics. In the video, an influencer known as “Dr. Maalouf” quoted an imam who suggested that Muslim communities could build influence by running for local offices, moving to school boards and township positions, and eventually aiming for even higher elected offices.
This post attracted attention and responses, including another video from someone identifying as an Iranian expatriate, who linked Mamdani’s promises to familiar political rhetoric and warned that similar patterns of political transformation would soon affect Western societies. Beyond individual social media reactions, Mamdani’s primary win was celebrated by members of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) at a recent convention in Chicago. Reports from the event described a strong pro-Palestinian sentiments among the delegates and suggested that the DSA’s influence inside the Democrat Party is rapidly expanding.
Former Democrat operative Asra Nomani has written extensively about historical and organizational links between progressive, socialist, and Muslim activist groups. According to Nomani, alliances between these groups, along with strategic engagement in institutions such as universities and nonprofit organizations, is paving the way for broader political influence. She cites notable names, organizational growth, and funding shifts as the explanation for this growing political movement.
Data from the RAIR Foundation USA (a project of the infamous Council on American-Islamic Relations or CAIR) shows that in the most recent election cycle, dozens of candidates identified as Muslim won public office across the country — including city and town council members, school board members, judges, and statewide offices such as lieutenant governor in Virginia. Asra Nomani says that this “red-green alliance” (the joining of socialist and Islamist political movements) is making significant inroads, already causing a realignment in the Democrat Party’s character, and it’s not slowing down.
