The Trump Administration took a bold step in its first year in office to curb illegal immigration by offering a voluntary deportation bonus. In fact, at Christmas time, the Department of Homeland Security tripled the offer to $3,000 plus free travel home to illegal aliens who chose to self-deport. Since President Trump took office in January 2025, twomillion illegalshave already chosen to return to their home countries voluntarily, according to DHS data.
The rationale is simple: forced deportations cost taxpayers about $17,000 per person. Even more astonishing, the average lifetime cost to American taxpayers of an illegal alien has been estimated at $100,000 or more once you factor in entitlement programs, public education, law enforcement, and healthcare burdens. If the government can incentivize people to leave on their own and still reduce the overall cost, that’s both effective AND fiscally responsible.
Voluntary, or self-deportation is not a new idea. In fact, it was the primary method used by President Dwight Eisenhower in 1954 when his administration oversaw the then-largest deportation effort in U.S. history. Back then, liberals didn’t interfere with deportations — they supported law and order. The Left’s criticism today of Trump’s immigration crackdown rings hollow now that we’re finally seeing real action to remove those who have repeatedly violated our laws. In fact, despite their best efforts, the liberal media of hasn’t been able to land a solid blow! CBS News reportedly planned a big sympathetic story on forced deportations for 60 Minutes, but after leadership changes at the network, the segment was pulled. The narrative is shifting. Most people understand what is happening: This issue isn’t just about costs. It’s about upholding the rule of law.
Make no mistake—there are still challenges. Big corporations have pushed back on workplace raids, and Democrat-controlled cities have tried to resist immigration enforcement at all costs. Activist judges and federal courts have slow-walked enforcement by failing to rule swiftly on key petitions. Despite these obstacles, the shift toward voluntary deportation is both effective and is something we can celebrate. The Trump Administration has not only offered good policies, but practical and cost-effective ways to achieve them.
