Washington, D.C.: Moments ago, President Trump unveiled a new proposal to overhaul our convoluted and outdated immigration system. While not decreasing the overall incoming volume, it would drastically change the makeup of immigrants who come through this new merit-based system. This is the first such U.S. immigration policy overhaul in over 50 years.
“Our immigration laws have been saddled with decades of political and bureaucratic baggage,” said Phyllis Schlafly Eagles President Ed Martin. “It’s high time we directly tackle this issue instead of fighting political skirmishes on the outskirts. Trump’s plan is an exciting and necessary step forward. United States citizenship should not be taken lightly or assigned randomly.”
President Trump called this proposal a “green card system that would adopt a rising standard of living for our citizens.” Trump’s system will replace our current inadequate green card categories with a “Build America Visa.”
“Like Canada and so many other modern countries,” President Trump continued, “we will create an easy-to-navigate points-based system. … This will increase the diversity of immigration flows into our country.”
