In his first two months on the job, New York’s self-proclaimed socialist mayor Zohran Mamdani has made fighting President Trump’s federal immigration policies his primary focuses, at the expense of his own citizens! One of his most recent executive orders forbids city agencies from sharing information with federal officials – including Immigration and Customs Enforcement. “ICE is more than a rogue agency,” Mamdani pompously declared. “It is a manifestation of the abuse of power.” New York, America’s largest so-called “sanctuary city,” is currently holding over 7,000 criminal illegal aliens for whom detainers have been issued by federal officials, but Mamdani’s administration has prohibited the city from turning over these lawbreakers to ICE.
Federal officials have challenged these policies in court, but those challenges have stalled in front of a Biden-appointed Judge. In anticipating an immigration crackdown, like Minneapolis has experienced, Mamdani is busy ramping up his resistance with the creation of new “response committees” to oppose the enforcement of federal law.
What Mamdani’s administration should be focusing on is the plight of its own citizens, including the scourge of winter weather that has racked the East Cost. Since late January, at least 18 people have reportedly frozen to death outdoors in New York City. Critics, including Mamdani’s predecessor Eric Adams, blame these deaths squarely on the Mamdani administration’s prioritization of fighting President Trump rather than the public health and safety needs of the city. Homeless people are dying because they aren’t in shelters. Huge piles are garbage have gone uncollected for weeks, blocking streets and sidewalks. Rats are prolific. And a record-breaking 80,000 New Yorkers placed emergency calls in January due to lake of residential heat and hot water.
Mamdani’s fanciful spending programs and permissive attitude toward homeless encampments are largely responsible for his residents’ unsafe and unsanitary situations. His job as mayor is to deal with the strain on city services and the dangers of public transportation. He is failing terribly at his real job, all so he can make the left’s donors and leaders happy. The left’s singular focus in opposing rule of law is quickly unraveling America’s largest city.
