Long before Phyllis Schlafly became renowned for her work to support the nuclear family unit, she was an expert in the field of foreign policy and defense. Unlike what was portrayed in the loosely biographical miniseries Mrs. America, Phyllis Schlafly was a well-known power broker who was not a stranger to calling meetings with Members of Congress and White House officials to educate them on the finer points of nuclear policy.
We don’t have to wonder what Phyllis would say about foreign policy when it comes to Communist China. She openly wrote that they “don’t play by the rules or keep their promises.” Unfortunately, the Biden Administration doesn’t seem to have read up on Phyllis Schlafly’s timeless wisdom. The watchdog group Americans for Public Trust obtained calendars which show that Biden Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm met with China’s National Energy Administration chairman twice in the days immediately leading up to Biden’s decision to release fifty million barrels of oil from our Strategic Petroleum Reserve.
While the exact subject matter discussed in the meetings is not known, it is not hard to guess since Biden announced that our oil release would happen in conjunction with “other major energy consuming nations including China.” Obviously, Granholm obtained assurance from the Chinese government that they would release oil from their strategic reserves alongside our own to decrease global prices.
Just as anyone who knows Phyllis’s writings could have predicted, China didn’t follow through on their promise. Instead of releasing oil from their reserve, they took advantage of the decreased prices caused by America’s release to bolster their own stockpiles. That is classic Chinese foreign policy. Our leaders pretend to have accomplished something by getting the Chinese to agree with us on a course of action, then China proceeds to break their word in order to take advantage of America.
We have to stop falling for this same tired take on foreign policy. It’s time for our leaders to follow Phyllis Schlafly’s wisdom and get tough on China.
