It may be April Fool’s Day, but the only thing foolish so far about Trump’s second term are the actions of America’s flailing political left wing. That foolishness was on full display last month when President Donald Trump delivered his first address (this term) to a joint session of Congress. The President claimed the mandate American voters gave him last November and he articulated a bold vision for a renewed America. There were no pale pastels on the teleprompter that night. Something we noticed here at Phyllis Schlafly Eagles is just how many of his policies sounded very similar to the issues Phyllis Schlafly fought for over the years.
Reclaiming American sovereignty of the Panama Canal, developing a strategic missile defense system for the United States, declaring English as our official national language — he proposed so many popular and frankly smart ideas that we were sent scurrying to the archives to find all of Phyllis’s writing on the topics. We have no doubt that if she were here today, she would be having the time of her political life!
However, Trump’s commanding speech was matched in dramatic fashion buy a series of chaotic and unfortunate decisions by Democrat members of Congress. Congressman Al Green interrupted Trump’s speech for several minutes in what appeared to be a planned show to get himself removed from the House floor. He was censured two days later. A few other Democrats chose to ceremoniously exit the room throughout the evening. But what flabbergasted most viewers was the insistence of Democrats in the room to sit on their hands. With rare exception, the Democrat caucus did not stand or applaud a single thing all evening. This quickly led to a backlash even from their own party, as liberal Members of Congress ignored even the most patriotic, non-partisan moments just to satiate their hatred of Trump.
If this foolishness is a glimpse of the new demoralized Democrat Party going into the midterm elections, they may soon long for the days of Kamala Harris’s semi-competent campaign.
