Phyllis Schlafly was a master of grassroots politics. Her command of the issues and her political victories are almost unmatched in the 20th Century. For one big example, we need look no further than her endorsement of Donald Trump in March of 2016. In her speech, she proclaimed Trump as the grassroots’ “choice, not an echo” of that election year. I think the last nine years have proven her right.
The question for us now, however, is what exactly was Phyllis Schlafly’s formula and how do we replicate it? Phyllis and her grassroots Eagles produced many conferences, seminars, and guidebooks over the years that included all the training on committees, voter registration, and precinct captains. But at the heart of it all was Phyllis’s wonderful ability to balance her uncompromising values and convictions with a keen sense of political intuition and strategy.
Phyllis Schlafly understood a great principle that grassroots conservatives must take to heart today: it’s not good enough just to be right. Phyllis knew that the key to making change was to be effective and work inside the system, even if your goal is to change it. She understood how to build relationships, even with people she had many disagreements with. She often said she welcomed anyone to “support her issue for the reason of their choice!” She was quick with charm, wit, and a disarming smile. Even those who hated what she stood for respected her political prowess.
So what lessons are there for the grassroots now? Be well-versed in political mechanisms, and use the system to make change. Build effective relationships and coalitions, because even a flawed vehicle can help move you forward.
And most importantly, remember that politics is about people. Be persuasive in convincing people the right way to go, not just yelling that you’re right and they’re wrong. If we want to win, we must balance our convictions with an ever-changing world of strategy. In a world of political wannabes, be a Phyllis Schlafly.
