Each year, between Christmas and the end of February, my hometown of Alton, Illinois is host to the largest concentration of American Bald Eagles outside of Alaska. That was one of the reasons I used the name Eagle when I launched Eagle Forum in 1972. But I also knew it would take more than human strength to do battle with the radical feminists, the advocates of abortion, and their powerful friends in the media and the government. So I chose Isaiah 40:31 as the theme verse for our important work: “They who wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles. They shall run and not be weary, and they shall walk and not faint.” I include that verse on most Eagle Forum literature and think of those words each morning when I put an eagle pin on my dress.
The battle to preserve the sanctity of marriage and human life, to restrict pornography, to reduce illiteracy, to promote chastity, and to protect the right to display the Ten Commandments in public is an all-consuming and never-ending task, but Eagle Forum members have not grown weary. The Lord continues to provide us with strength, and He has blessed our work, allowing us to soar beyond my wildest expectations.
My eagle story is one of 365 stories in a book called The One Year Life Verse Devotional. In this book, you can read the life verse chosen by leaders such as Jim and Shirley Dobson and Chuck Colson, and even historic figures such as Abraham Lincoln, the French mathematician Pascal, and Rosa Parks. There are also musicians, actors and athletes whose names you’ll recognize. We all found comfort or guidance in a single verse from the Bible. You can read one of these stories each day in the book called The One Year Life Verse Devotional — and you’ll be inspired with plenty of examples proving that God’s Word really can make a difference in your life!
