Look No Further Than The Heart of Liberalism—L.A. & San Francisco—To See Dramatic Shift
Washington, D.C.: “Two years into the leftwing narrative of ‘defund the police,’ Democrats are doing a sharp about-face,” said Ed Martin, president of Phyllis Schlafly Eagles. “From coast to coast, safety and law and order are the words suddenly slipping out of the mouths of our most infamous liberal state and city leaders. When one examines the devastating wake of soft-on-crime, tough-on-cops policies the left has embraced since 2020, it’s not surprising that voters have shifted far to the opposite. What is surprising, frankly, is just how many Democrats are listening. I suppose we shouldn’t be shocked at their uncanny ability to preserve their own electoral hopes.
“Last year, New York City voters installed Eric Adams, a former NYPD officer who’s rhetoric was shockingly pro-police compared to his national Democrat colleagues. Washington, D.C.’s mayor, Muriel Bowser, called for hiring additional police officers and returning to serving the residents of the District and not their radical ideology! Even though Bowser never officially pushed for ‘defunding police,’ she bent over backward to accommodate BLM rioters in her city.
“Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, who’s been a model of leftist hatred for police, has taken a sharply different tone this year. Not only is she now calling for criminals to be kept off the streets, but she’s even begun increasing the police budget she slashed $80 million from in the last two years. I suppose those are the lengths a politician is willing to go to when the resignation of 600 leads to your city suffering from the highest murder rate in 25 years.
“And last, but not least, on our ‘Crime Turnaround Tour’ are more major electoral shifts—by California voters, no less. Two candidates for Los Angeles mayor have entered a runoff election this month, and both of them represent a starkly different policing policy than outgoing Mayor Eric Garcetti. Either one will add cops to the street and hundreds of officers back to the police forces that have been so politically battered these last two years. Similarly, San Francisco voters resoundingly recalled George Soros-backed San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin, who had essentially stopped prosecuting felonies and misdemeanors. Even SF Mayor London Breed, who in 2020 shifted $120 million from police budgets to social programs, has radically changed course to tough-on-crime, pro-police rhetoric. I guess a 45% rise in burglaries, a 37% rise in homicides, and rampant, organized shoplifting, car break-ins, and drug dealing in the streets was too much for even woke southern California voters!
“The results of the left’s radical anti-police agenda have been rotten fruit—as we knew they would. The shift in Democrat narrative leads me to believe that conservatives should push forward with full force and expect great results this November at the ballot box. Rabid wokeism doesn’t work! Voters know it, and even the purveyors of such garbage are getting the message.”
