St. Louis, MO: This morning, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a dreadful 6-3 decision to legalize sports gambling, in Murphy v. NCAA. If Congress and the States do not overturn it, this could result in millions of our youth addicted to gambling and the loss of integrity in American sports.
The Court failed to recognize that gambling is a terrible vice that is responsible for the destruction of many families and even entire towns like Atlantic City. Most of the Supreme Court Justices ignored how the gambling industry exploits those in our society who are least able to defend themselves.
This Court decision is a stunning display of judicial supremacy that entirely invalidates an Act of Congress (the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act) that has worked well for 26 years. The Justices rejected the position of the Trump Administration and numerous conservative groups, including Eagle Forum Education & Legal Defense Fund, which filed briefs urging the Court not to unleash sports gambling on our country.
We call on our legislatures to fight back immediately against the massive predatory gambling industry and the widespread destruction that it causes.
Phyllis Schlafly Eagles will redouble our efforts to block and ban gambling as it spreads further under this bad Murphy v. NCAA Court decision. The gambling industry corrupts our political process and has no redeeming value.
