There is good news on the transgender front, but it comes with a heavy warning! Theologian Carl Trueman has a new book called The Desecration of Man, and in a recent interview he cut to the heart of where we are as a culture and where we are going. He is encouraged, but wants to make sure we don’t celebrate too soon. On the recent pushback against transgender ideology, he says:
"I rejoice in the setbacks that the trans lobby has faced. I'm not willing to do a lap of victory yet because I think they're well-funded and highly organized. We need to keep up the pressure."
But Trueman goes further — and this is where it gets important. He warns that transgender ideology is not just a political problem. It is connected to something much larger — a movement called transhumanism. That word simply means: the belief that human beings can and should be redesigned. Not just gender. Everything. The body. The mind. Even death itself. Technology, in this vision, doesn't just serve humanity — it replaces it.
In his words:
"Transgenderism is more connected philosophically to transhumanism than it is to the L, the G and the B. That's the political alliance. The philosophical issue is transhumanism. And transhumanism really involves… aspiring to abolish man."
Artificial intelligence, Trueman argues, is the engine driving that abolition. Here is where he uses a striking image. Our technology, he says, has raced so far ahead of our moral thinking that we can no longer picture the consequences of what we are building. He puts it this way:
"There's no teleology to it" — meaning there is no goal, no purpose, no destination. "We do it because we can. When you think of the rhetoric surrounding artificial intelligence, it's all about replacing human beings. We're going to be replaced by something we have made but which is superior to us."
Think about that. We are building tools designed to make us obsolete — and calling it progress.
At the root of all of it, Trueman argues, is the rejection of God. When we lose our Creator, we lose our identity. We no longer know what a human being is or what one is worth. This is a huge battle ahead worth understanding and worth fighting.
