The latest solution being floated to address COVID-19 is the implementation of a vaccine passport system, which would require citizens to prove that they have been vaccinated before being allowed to go to certain public meeting spaces like restaurants. The passport might be required by employers, making it impossible to obtain or maintain a job without it. Sports leagues for youngsters could be limited to those who comply with passport requirements. Once this insanity gets started, there is no telling how far it will go.
At the heart of this proposal is one very big issue: Should Americans be compelled to place a foreign substance in their bodies because the federal government tells them to? The Fourth Amendment specifically grants citizens the right to be “secure in their persons.” In this context, “persons” is understood to be a reference to an individual’s bodily autonomy. Should this not extend to a person’s right not to take a vaccine if they choose?
Leftists are so quick to say that women should have autonomy over their own bodies when it comes to abortion, but they are not so quick to respect the rights of women and men to control whether a new vaccine is right for them. The hypocrisy is stunning. In 100% of cases, abortion ends a human life. The odds of dying from COVID-19 are astronomically lower. Furthermore, those who wish to get the vaccine for their own protection are free to do so, but unborn children are given no chance to “vaccinate” themselves against the possibility of abortion.
A holistic approach to the Constitutional principle of bodily autonomy should afford autonomy to everyone. Unborn children should have the right not to be killed and adults should have the right to take the vaccine or not depending upon their own comfort level and convictions. A top-down vaccine passport system to force compliance is not in the best interests of our nation or our citizens. I hope every person who supports the right of women to control their bodies will join me in soundly rejecting vaccine passports and mandates of any kind.
