For decades, the American left has mastered the art of manipulating words. They disguise radical agendas as soft-sounding, inclusive, seemingly harmless phrases, and they manage to shift public opinion as a result. But today, something has changed. The left’s rhetorical power is collapsing! The radicals leading the modern leftist movement cannot, or perhaps will not, use the same linguistic masks of the past. They have grown blunt, alienating, and obviously detached from the average American.
Radical leftists were once linguistic magicians, using terms like “peace,” “diversity,” “inclusive,” “choice,” and “tolerance” to invoke warmth and compassion. These words served to welcome the more moderate listener and to break down resistance to their policies and agenda. They used to know how to soften the radical edge and seduce the population into thinking their extreme ideas were mainstream.
Today, however, the left’s talent for soft, persuasive rhetoric is seemingly gone. According to a memo by the centrist Democrat group Third Way titled “Was It Something I Said?”, activists now use expressions described as “extreme, divisive, elitist and obfuscatory.” The memo laments how the left’s language has become disconnected from ordinary citizens—a total failure to speak to common sense.
The American left has become the movement filled with therapy-speak that assumes victimhood over agency. They use seminar-room language that speaks only to academic elites, not kitchen table Americans. They chant organizer jargon that alienates anything ordinary you and I say, reshaping our language itself. And most notably they have replaced basic biological recognition with gender-orientation correctness, demanding Americans say things like “birthing persons” and “pregnant people” — labels that Americans find either ignorant or downright hostile.
For those of us defending traditional American values, this is a strategic opportunity. If the left no longer bothers to hide behind a veneer of moderate language, Americans more easily see them for who they are. The object of words must be truth, not propaganda. In this moment, the guardians of Christian civilization can and should speak with boldness and clarity.
