Senate Democrats ought to fix their attention on the real threats facing America
Washington, D.C.: The Senate Committee on the Judiciary has announced they intend to hold a hearing on the long-expired Equal Rights Amendment and shove it through to a floor vote in the coming weeks.
“This is a ham-fisted attempt to circumvent the Constitution by ratifying a failed amendment via Congress instead of the States,” said Phyllis Schlafly Eagles President Ed Martin. “The unconstitutionality of this move is as blatant and ridiculous a move that we can expect from a deadlocked legislative body. First of all, the ERA is long-dead, as declared by the Department of Justice, liberal judges and justices, and even essentially the Supreme Court itself.
“Secondly, this move is pretty cowardly when you think of it. To suddenly trot out an effort liberals have pined over for decades on the heels of losing the other half of the federal legislative body? One would think Democrats in the Senate are only bringing out ERA when they know it won’t go anywhere. Perhaps they know how dangerously ambiguous it is to insert ‘sex’ into the Constitution? Or maybe they know that almost every legal protection sought for women (provided they can define one) is already now enshrined in U.S. law.
“This pitiful attempt to resurrect ERA isn’t serious. It’s political theater, plain and simple. In fact, it’s actually a distraction from the real job function of our legislature. Where are the hearings and oversight investigations into a surge of hazardous trail derailments or industrial fires? Where are the Senate hearings on foreign intelligence services sending airborne devices across our mainland? Senate Democrats ought to fix their attention on the real threats facing America, rather than drum up long-defunct initiatives that whip their voting base into a frenzy. Get to the real work, senators!”
