Conservatives who critique the left’s obsession with “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion” are derided as being alarmists. Those that raise legitimate concerns over critical race theory are demeaningly labeled culture warriors. Yet, these leftist philosophies pour over far outside the philosophical realm. When taken to their logical extent, they have real-world consequences for America in both domestic and foreign policy.
One key example comes from political science professor Peter Beinart who wrote a guest essay for the New York Times all about how conservatives’ China policy is based on some racial motive rather than a desire to protect freedom-loving people from totalitarian communist dictatorships. He claims that conservatives “don’t only see China’s rise as a threat to American power. They see it as a threat to white Christian power, too.”
Beinart supports his outlandish claim by pointing out the “special allure” that the Far East held for Christian missionaries dating back to the mid-1800s. It is certainly true that many spiritual heroes boldly left the comforts of western life behind to share the life-changing power of the Christian gospel with the people of China and other Asian lands. Many would even give their lives for this noble cause. But to transform this selfless act of devotion to God into some sort of racist attack on Asian people is the most nonsensical of claims.
Of course, Communist China today hates Christianity and actively persecutes both native and foreign Christians. If we want to secure the rights of Christians and other religions to practice their faiths freely, we must stand strong against Chinese influence. Peter Beinart and his academic ilk know that they cannot deny the brutality of communism when confronted by the evidence. That is why they apply the principles of critical race theory to create an ad hominem attack. That is when a debater attacks the character of an individual rather than the content of the claim they are making. Reject the ad hominem CRT attack on sound policy against Communist China. We must prevent their brutal track record of human rights abuses from reaching our shores.
