Washington, D.C.: In a White House press briefing this afternoon, President Trump declared houses of worship as essential. He ordered governors to allow churches to open this weekend and threatened to override them if they prohibit services from taking place.
“This is a huge win for our First Amendment freedoms,” said Ed Martin, president of Phyllis Schlafly Eagles. “The Constitution is the law of the land and the freedom to worship exists even during a pandemic. We are grateful to President Trump for recognizing this and upholding religious liberty.
“There are millions of Americans experiencing great trials in our nation’s time of crisis. It is important for them to receive spiritual and emotional support by gathering with their fellow believers. Most importantly, this follows God’s command in the Scriptures to assemble together. We applaud President Trump for having the courage to take this bold step in defense of religious freedom.”
