St. Louis, MO: This morning the House State Affairs committee of the South Dakota Legislature defeated H.J.R. 1005, an application for an Article V Constitutional Convention. Less than two weeks after its first reading, legendary Eagle leader Kitty Werthmann and her amazing, hard-working volunteers defeated the bill today in committee vote.
“This is a great victory to start the 2019 state legislative sessions,” said Ed Martin, president of Phyllis Schlafly Eagles. “Phyllis Schlafly knew and spent many years convincing people that a Constitutional Convention – or Convention of States as its modern proponents call it – is a horrible idea that would open our Constitution to untold dangers in our modern era of political and moral confusion.
“Phyllis Schlafly Eagles under the guidance of our long-time leaders like Kitty Werthmann and also Andy Schlafly have spearheaded this issue across the country and defeated this in many states. We are so proud of their work. Andy is quick to remind us that in 2018, we defeated Constitutional Convention proposals in 19 states and did not see passage in even one! Thanks to the leadership of Kitty Werthmann and our many volunteer leaders and activists we are on our way to another excellent legislative record.”
