Washington, D.C.: The Democrat-led House of Representatives voted to give statehood to the District of Columbia. This is a smack in the face to our nation’s framers and the Constitution they left us.
“Nancy Pelosi and her House cronies voted today to give themselves more power,” said Ed Martin, president of Phyllis Schlafly Eagles. “Our Founding Fathers wisely knew that the seat of federal power should not be equally counted in our representative republic. It’s a very unwise and bold grab for power to push for D.C. statehood. Let there be no misunderstanding: this is Pelosi and the Democrats unashamedly giving themselves more power.”
Phyllis Schlafly said it best in her Phyllis Schlafly Reportfrom December 2007: “Our Constitution’s framers decided on a separate and independent federal enclave to serve as the seat of the new government, a territory outside of and independent from every state. This means that the District of Columbia does not have its own Senators and Representatives. That decision was not a mistake by the Founding Fathers, but was an integral part of the original constitutional design to keep the seat of our Federal Government out of the political process.”
