Washington, D.C.: Phyllis Schlafly Eagles has been informed that the U.S. House Judiciary Committee will host a hearing next Tuesday on the long-expired Equal Rights Amendment. Phyllis Schlafly opposed the ERA from its inception and saw to its defeat in state legislatures and its Congressional deadline expiration. We are working with solid conservative Congressman Andy Biggs from Arizona, who sits on Judiciary, to provide testimony for this hearing.
“Not only did ERA expire over 35 years ago, but it’s been proven time and again that ERA would only hurt women’s rights and enshrine many controversial things in the Constitution,” said Phyllis Schlafly Eagles President Ed Martin. “Support for ERA has proven to be support for federally funded, unrestricted abortion on demand. To force taxpayer funding of abortion in clear violation of the moral convictions of so many is un-American and incredibly unpopular. The fact of the matter is that state supreme courts like New Mexico’s have held that an Equal Rights Amendment is sufficient grounds for mandating taxpayer funding of abortion. This is a very real threat that should be addressed.
“It is also now abundantly clear that the threats to women’s rights ERA proponents talk about simply will not be helped by ERA. Brave women like Phyllis Schlafly pointed out that women already had full equality under the law. Today, the equality of women is more secure than ever.
As Phyllis Schlafly so eloquently put it in her February 1972 newsletter, “Of all the classes of people who ever lived, the American woman is the most privileged.” The Equal Rights Amendment is completely unnecessary and would have no benefit for the American woman.
