Washington, D.C.: House Democrats are expected to vote next week to make the District of Columbia our 51st state in the union.
“Big government leftists have long tried to give their D.C. power base more political sway,” said Ed Martin, president of Phyllis Schlafly Eagles. “Long have they pushed for representation and even Statehood because it solidifies more liberal seats in the Congress. This is blatantly against the wise intentions of the Founders. They knew the seat of Federal Government should not wield the power afforded to states under the doctrine of federalism. Phyllis Schlafly said it best in her 2007 December Phyllis Schlafly Report.”
Phyllis Schlafly: “Our Constitution’s framers decided on a separate and independent federal enclave to serve as the seat of the new government, a territory outside of and independent from every state. This means that the District of Columbia does not have its own Senators and Representatives. That decision was not a mistake by the Founding Fathers, but was an integral part of the original constitutional design to keep the seat of our Federal Government out of the political process.”
