St. Louis, MO: When Fred and Phyllis Schlafly debated Marc and Brenda Feigen-Fasteau on the ERA in 1974, the Schlaflys put Marc and Brenda in their places with the facts. However, FX Network’s Mrs. America show on Hulu tried to rewrite the story so the feminist darlings come out on top. Thankfully, Phyllis Schlafly Eagles has the full debate in our archives.
“It was clear from the outset that Mrs. America producers and writers are clearly pro-ERA and anti-Phyllis, but their latest episode sank to new lows,” said Ed Martin, president of Phyllis Schlafly Eagles. “It’s crystal clear from the show’s dialogue that the writers have watched not only the original Schlafly-Fasteau debate but also many other interviews with Fred and Phyllis! What they chose to depict on screen was a pure fabrication of flip-flopped dynamics, out-of-context lines (from separate interviews entirely), and completely made-up dialogue.
“It’s obviously not just shoddy research — it is clearly a blatant effort to mislead viewers. They want to paint Phyllis as a jealous, ignorant hypocrite who will fabricate what she doesn’t know just to score points. That’s just nonsense — Phyllis Schlafly was smart as a whip and had more facts than all the lawyers and feminists she ever met on stage. In this debate, the truth is quite opposite from what Cate Blanchett and Mrs. America have chosen to make up.”
