Protect Elections, Not AI Oligarchs

Protect Elections, Not AI Oligarchs

Artificial intelligence is smart, dangerous, and entirely without moral restraint. We have spent a lot of time on this broadcast talking about what AI can create and what it might replace. Today we need to talk about what it could steal — specifically, our elections.

Many Americans may not realize that the ballots cast in this midterm election are counted by electronic machines. Most of those machines have wireless connectivity. Former Mesa County, Colorado clerk Tina Peters discovered this firsthand. She was assured her county's voting machines had no outside connections, however a forensic examination found thirty-six wireless devices associated with the equipment. Remote connectivity exists because it makes software updates convenient, but also makes election machines sitting ducks.

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin stated publicly this past July that foreign adversaries have component parts inside America's voting machines. Those parts can easily give the ability to change voter registration, and even your vote! His words: it's not even up for debate.

In July, a group of autonomous AI agents operating in an isolated test environment broke out of their so-called secure “sandbox.” They created a secret messaging system among themselves, attacked an outside platform, and covered their tracks to avoid human detection. Dario Amodei, co-founder of Anthropic (the company that makes Claude) has publicly predicted that within six to twelve months, an AI swarm could be capable of taking over the entire internet with a persistent “botnet,” causing hundreds of billions of dollars in damage.

Think now about aiming that capability at an election. China already produces AI-generated video footage so convincing that a fabricated fistfight between major Hollywood actors went viral before people realized it was artificial. Foreign adversaries have every incentive to point that same capability at American voting infrastructure, and no federal regulation of domestic AI companies will stop them. They aren’t subject to our laws!

The solution is not complicated. Hand-counted paper ballots with adequate time before certification is how America conducted elections for most of its history. It is auditable, transparent, and immune to remote hacking. Every day we delay that reform is another day we leave our elections vulnerable.

The oligarchs building AI will be fine regardless of who wins midterm elections. The rest of us have a little more at stake.
