H.R. 8404, So-Called “Respect for Marriage Act,” Will Crush the First Amendment
Washington, D.C.: “While the Senate debates the toxic ‘Respect for Marriage Act,’ constituents from across the nation should be flooding Senate phone lines and email inboxes with the resounding demand they vote it down!” said Phyllis Schlafly Eagles President Ed Martin. “This legislation’s name is irony to the highest degree. Not only would it absolutely destroy the institution of marriage in America as it relates to civil government, but it would take the Bill of Rights down along with it.
“Even a quick read of this awful bill reveals that it would essentially force all fifty states to adopt the most extreme pro-LGBT marriage laws from the most liberal of our states. Anyone who offers this as a solution to respect state decisions is dead-wrong or lying to your face. The implementation of this bill as law will decimate any authority states had over their civil interaction with marriage and will more importantly completely erase the First Amendment protection on religious liberty and freedom of conscience.”
Martin concluded, “Every single Republican and many Democrats must be made to recognize the incredible and long-reaching consequences of this bill and vote it down. Far from any call for unity, this measure would divide America more sharply than ever before. I pray the Senate phone lines don’t stop ringing against this bill until the final roll has been called and the so-called ‘Respect for Marriage’ act is defeated.”
