Washington, D.C.: The House is expected to vote tomorrow on a $3 trillion spending bill called the HEROES Act (H.R. 6800), as well as a resolution to authorize remote committee proceedings and proxy voting during public health emergencies and for other purposes (H. Res. 965).
“Both of these bills will advance big-government, liberal priorities rather than helping hardworking Americans,” said Ed Martin, president of Phyllis Schlafly Eagles. “A vote in favor of H.R. 6800 is a vote to give stimulus checks to illegal immigrants, remove Hyde protections that restrict federal funding of abortion, and federalize our election process. The federal government should not be in the business of determining how states run their elections or whether voter ID laws are required.
“Just as frightening is Democrats’ push to do away with a 200-year-old rule on the use of proxies. They want to change the rules to allow proxies to establish a quorum in committee meetings and on the House floor. Each member would be permitted to represent 10 proxies during a floor vote. What this means is that legislation could pass with only 22 Democrat House members present. That’s insane — this resolution is a clear violation of the Constitution which requires a majority of members present to do business.”
It’s time the House set aside partisan shenanigans and focus on real measures to help millions of struggling Americans. Every member who votes in favor of these liberal proposals, H.R. 6800 and H. Res. 965, should be defeated at the polls in November.
