Misnamed “Equal Rights Amendment” Would Have Hidden Consequences
Washington, D.C.: “Advisors around President Joe Biden are calling for him to legitimize a phony constitutional amendment that would effectively end girls-only sports, shelters for battered women, and more,” said Ed Martin, president of Phyllis Schlafly Eagles. “The Equal Rights Amendment claims to be an advance for women, but nothing could be further from the truth.
“While the doctrinaire equality of ERA might seem like a good idea, let’s not forget that the Supreme Court in Brown v. Board of Education (1954) rightly decided that “separate but equal” is not true equality. Under ERA, sex would be treated just like race. Separate sports teams for boys and girls would be the same as separate teams for black and white. The same would go for bathrooms, showers, battered women’s shelters, and everywhere that Americans have chosen to make a commonsense distinction between men and women.
“The Equal Rights Amendment needs to be taken seriously for the threat it is. As a constitutional amendment, there would be no room for exceptions, no matter how reasonable. The feminist agenda of the Biden Administration will not help American women and girls with the real problems they face. America must once again soundly reject the Equal Rights Amendment.”
